What questions should you ask your wedding photographer before booking?

Aug 04 2016 Leave a Comment

I’ve put together a guide to help you find the right wedding photographer and give you a little more confidence in meeting and talking to prospective photographers!

Planning a wedding is a stressful event that seems to last forever. There are so many different things to choose, plan and set and never enough hours in the day. And your wedding photography? That’s another story entirely. You have to choose the perfect person to capture your wedding photos, make sure you get along and trust them to preserve your wedding day forever! Not an easy task, and  I know every blushing bride wants to be prepared.
So I’ve put together a little checklist for my brides, prospective clients and readers to help them out when testing the waters with possible wedding photographers. You might not choose to ask all of these, but they’re definitely something to consider. Also, I’d advise against copying-and-pasting these questions directly to a photographer – as many will see it as a spam email and may not think you value their services.  When first approaching a photographer you want to work with, I recommend asking about their style and approach as a photographer individually and letting them show you why you should choose them over every other person with a camera.

.
  • What is your style?
  • How many hours of coverage do you provide and when do you start/finish?
  • If things run late or my wedding is delayed, will you stay later to capture the events? Is there an extra charge?
  • Do we sign a contract when booking? (You should!!)
  • Can we read the terms and conditions of the contract now?
  • Is there a deposit to pay?
  • Do you charge travel expenses or time?
  • Are you insured?
  • Do you require a meal or will you bring your own lunch?
  • Can I submit my wedding photos to wedding blogs?
  • What will you wear?
  • What equipment do you use?
  • Can I write a list of shots I would like taken or make a Pinterest mood board?
  • How long after the wedding do we receive the images and in what format?
  • Do you supply a USB/gallery/CD/album/prints with this package?
  • Is there a second photographer available?
  • What happens if you are ill on the day of our wedding?
  • Do you have a backup camera/backup equipment with you?
  • Can I see two previous full wedding galleries?
  • Do we get black and white images too?
  • What happens if it rains on the day?
  • Can you walk me through the process from now?
  • When do we pay the final balance?
 .
.
Obviously every photographer will be different, but it’s important that you have an idea of what you want and what you will receive when you are booking a photographer!  I hope these questions give you some inspiration about how to talk to your photographer!
